Chiropractic and pregnancy – a perfect match!
The pelvic is made up of three joints: the pubic symphysis at the front and 2 sacroiliac (si) joints at the back.
Together these joints form a ring ( the birth canal) of which many muscles and ligaments attach.
Chiropractic ensures that these joints are moving properly and that the pelvis is balanced, so that you are as comfortable as possible and that the baby has the most amount of space.
Chiropractic and ligament tension in pregnancy
Pelvis alignment during pregnancy is essential; for comfort, room for baby to move and eventually descend through the birth canal, and for proper firing of muscles, via a clear nervous system.
Pelvic girdle pain, ligament pain and/or lower back pain are common during pregnancy, but not normal.
If your pelvis isn’t positioned optimally it can cause a torsion of the ligament attachments from the uterus to the front of the pelvis and the sacrum (tailbone). So you can appreciate how misalignments of the pelvis can add tension to these ligaments, cause pain; and less “room” for baby.
Chiropractic, and more specifically, the webster technique is a sacral analysis and adjustment that restores alignment to the pelvis, its ligament attachments and surrounding muscles.
Don’t suffer needlessly. Get adjusted!
Chiropractic adjustments are gentle, specific; and tailored to the person.
FAQ:
PREGNANCY CHIROPRACTIC & THE WEBSTER TECHNIQUE
Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is considered safe when provided by a chiropractor with prenatal training. Adjustments are gentle and adapted for each trimester, avoiding pressure on the abdomen. Chiropractors use specialised techniques and pregnancy pillows to support comfort.
👉 Research supports chiropractic care as a safe, drug-free way to reduce common pregnancy discomforts such as back pain, pelvic pain, and sciatica【Alcantara et al., 2011】.
What is the Webster Technique and how does it help?
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic adjustment focused on balancing the pelvis and sacrum, and relaxing the surrounding ligaments and muscles. This balance may reduce stress on the uterus and create more space for the baby to move.
👉 It’s often used by chiropractors to support pregnant women in improving pelvic alignment, which may positively influence labour and delivery【ICPA; Martel et al., 2019】.
How can pelvic alignment affect my baby’s position?
If the pelvis is misaligned, it can tighten the ligaments and muscles that support the uterus, which may limit the baby’s movement. This is sometimes called intrauterine constraint. Balanced pelvic alignment helps create the best possible environment for babies to find an optimal position before birth【Webster, 2000; ICPA】.
Why choose a pregnancy chiropractor in Sydney?
Pregnancy chiropractors in Sydney often have postgraduate training in perinatal and paediatric care, including Webster certification. They work alongside local midwives, doulas, and other health professionals. Choosing a trained pregnancy chiropractor means you’re getting gentle, safe care tailored to the unique needs of pregnancy【Da Silva et al., 2019】.
Can chiropractic care ease back or ligament pain in pregnancy?
Yes. Pregnancy hormones like relaxin loosen ligaments to prepare the pelvis for birth, but this can also cause instability and pain. Chiropractic adjustments can help reduce pressure on joints, improve posture, and support better movement patterns, which often leads to less back, hip, and ligament pain【Stuber & Smith, 2008】.
