Shoulder Girdle Stretches for Babies: Supporting Development & Milestones

Here are a few simple home exercises you could do with your baby to help relieve shoulder girdle tension.

Move slowly, gently and have fun.

Hold their hand and:
- Take their arm across their body;
- Out to the side (keeping their arm on the ground) and above their head
- Out infront of them and above their head
- Repeat the other side!

Sometimes these exercises can assist with:

Motor milestone support – rolling, crawling, sitting, and eventually walking.

Tongue tie support – shoulder girdle stretches can complement oral motor exercises by reducing upper body tension, helping babies feed, latch, and move their tongue more effectively.

Improved shoulder mobility and strength – helping babies use their arms more freely during play and tummy time.

Posture and spinal alignment – reducing tension in the upper body that may restrict natural movement.

Neurological development – encouraging cross-body coordination, reflex integration, and sensory-motor skills.

Tummy time success – easing tightness so babies can lift their head, push up, and build core strength.

Fine and gross motor skills – preparing the foundation for reaching, grasping, and coordinated play.

Overall comfort and relaxation – helping with muscle tightness from birth strain, positioning, or developmental delays
